Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Montclair
Age-grouped classes for ages 3 to 15
Our youth program teaches kids how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can improve mind, body, and spirit. Classes range from basic coordination drills through self-defense scenarios and sport Jiu Jitsu technique, and students gain confidence and social skills both as part of a team and on their own.
How classes are grouped
Children train alongside others close to their own age and size. Tiny Youth covers ages 3 to 6 in short sessions pitched at shorter attention spans. Youth 1 covers ages 7 to 10 and Youth 2 covers ages 11 to 15, each offered in the gi and in no-gi.
What kids learn on the mat
Coordination and movement first, then the fundamentals of grappling: how to keep a strong base, how to escape when someone has hold of you, how to control a position calmly. Older groups add sport technique and, for those who want it, competition preparation.
Confidence that carries off the mat
Jiu Jitsu asks children to solve problems under pressure and to keep their composure when things are not going their way. That is a habit that transfers — to school, to friendships, and to the situations parents most hope their child never faces.

Common questions
What age can my child start?
Our youngest group, Tiny Youth, starts at age 3. Children move up into Youth 1 for ages 7 to 10 and Youth 2 for ages 11 to 15 as they grow.
Does my child need any experience?
No. Every group takes complete beginners, and classes are structured so a new student can join and learn alongside children who have been training longer.
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
The gi is the traditional uniform, and training in it leans on grips and control using the fabric. No-gi is trained in athletic wear, moves faster, and relies on body control instead of grips. Both are offered for Youth 1 and Youth 2.
